Google Desktop Search to be Discontinued
I have used this product since it became available in 2004 and had enjoyed using it to find files on my desktop computer.
According to Google, " we’ll be discontinuing support for Google Desktop, including all of the associated APIs, services, plugins and gadgets. "
I am very surprised that Google has discontinued this products considering that it is used by " tens of millions of people ". That means that Google is giving up real estate on tens of millions of desktop computers. I would think that having a Google logo on all of those computers would be worth the cost of development.
In addition the negative PR may lead potential corporate clients to questions Google's commitment. Other products like X1 have been charging $49.00 for their destop and mobile search product.
Its too bad that Google is not extending the desktop brand to include searching for mobile devices, multiple PC's, and the cloud. Maybe Google does not have the resources to do this or wants to put the resources on something on another product.

Google Updates Voice Search and Image Search
- Google Search by image. Google now has the capability to search using an image on the desktop browser. Users can now upload any picture from their hard drives, or plug in an image URL from the web, and ask Google to identify what it is. Google’s “Goggles” mobile application has allowed people to search by taking photos with their mobile phones since its launch in 2009 for the Android Operating System.
- Google Voice search. Google now has speech recognition search on the desktop for Chrome users to allow people to speak, rather than type, their queries. Desktop Chrome users can view a microphone icon next to every Google search box. Google Voice search has long been available on Google’s mobile search applications and has been very useful for searching hands free.
- Instant Pages. Pages is version of the Instant Search feature launched last year by Google. Instant Pages renders a visual of the search page a user is likely to click on while the query is in the process of being typed. Instant Pages can shaves between two to five seconds off of the typical search time. Instant Pages is only available on the Chrome browser for now, but much like Instant Search, which launched on the browser before coming to mobile search, hopefully Instant pages can make the transition. Like Instant Search, which seemed tailor-made for searching on a mobile device where every click counts, Instant Pages could be a boon for mobile devices as Google pre-renders pages in the cloud while your search is being performed.
- Bottom Line: These new features allow for faster searching from multiple devices. The search results pages show results based on device type. It is important for website owners and companies to optimize web pages for all devices. With mobile devices only having so much space to show results higher ranking is very important.
